This morning, students from 3E shared a story called "The Honest Woodcutter" with everyone. I helped them write the script and they practiced very hard for the storytelling. They only had one week to prepare and, to my surprise, they could recite their lines! Well done 3E!

Let's Save the Whales!!!
Hello all!
Today when I watched the National Geographic Channel, I saw a very meaningful and interesting TVC about saving the whales.
I was very curious so I searched the website and found this:
http://www.tailsforwhales.org/
The idea behind is that if you take a photo with your hands gesturing like the tail of whale and upload the photo to their website. Together they collect the people's collective power and force governments to stop hunting whales at all.
Do you know what whales are endangered species? There aren't many whales left in the ocean. :( How sad it is! And in Japan, people still hunt whales, kill them just because they want to eat their meat!
Please help and save the whales. If you want to help, come and find me. I will take a picture of you and post your photo, together with your name, class and message to my other blog: http://ilovemissnickiewhales.blogspot.com/

Chinese Opera at Ma Wan
Hi all,
Last week, Ma Wan was a happening place with Tin Hau's birthday celebration going on for the entire week. I am sure you heard a lot of Chinese Operas during class last week. Me too! So I was curious and last Thursday I went to watch the opera after school. I am glad that our traditions are still well preserved and practised in this modern time. Chinese Opera is the essence of Chinese culture. Although I also find it boring sometimes, I think it should be preserved and continued.
There were a lot of people watching the opera, many of them are as old as our parents and grandparents. I found myself the youngest audience there. :P
In this photo you can see our school and the Chinese Opera theatre. I think it is an interesting photo. :)

About Ma Wan and Tin Hau's Birthday
Hello all!
I am sure all of you are aware of the fact that there have been some Chinese celebrations happening near our school this week. And you probably have seen this temporary construction just opposite to our school:
This is a temporary theatre built by bamboo sticks and zinc plates. People can watch Chinese opera on stage. This is part of the Tin Hau's (Queen of Heaven, or Goddess of the Sea) Birthday celebrations.
Ma Wan, where our school is, is a fisherman island. Many years ago, people from Ma Wan were mostly fishermen and some tourists still come here to eat yummy seafood. For the fishermen, Tin Hau is very important to them because they believe that the Goddess will protect them when they are fishing in the rough sea. Hence every year on her birthday the fishermen celebrate it. In old times it was one of the big days because people could go out and watch lion dance and Chinese opera. I found two websites that talk about Ma Wan and Tin Hau. They are written in rather easy English so I think you can read and understand the story of the place of our school and some Chinese traditions.
